Il Certificato Biologico

The Organic certificate

"Organic" is a word you read on everything from yogurt to bubble bath, and by dint of reading it, it has lost some of its weight. But the real certificate, the one issued by an authorized body, is something else entirely compared to a generic "natural" written on the label. Behind it lies a precise system of rules, annual controls, and checks. Here's what it really means, in simple terms, and why it makes a difference when you buy an essential oil or a cosmetic.

What "organic" means by law

In Europe, organic production is regulated by EU Regulation 2018/848. In practice, this means: no synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, no GMOs, attention to soil fertility and biodiversity, and crop rotation. It is not an adjective that a company attributes to itself for marketing purposes: it is a written, public standard that is the same for everyone who wants to use that word. "Natural", on the other hand, means nothing legally defined; anyone can write it.

Who controls, and how

An organic company is monitored by a control body authorized by the Ministry. Every year there are field inspections, product analyses, and record checks: what you sowed, what you used, what you sold. If something is not right, the certification is suspended or revoked. This is a third-party control, independent of the company, and this is the point: you don't have to trust the producer's word, you trust those who verify it.

Why it matters more for an essential oil

Here's a technical reason that few consider. An essential oil is an extreme concentrate: very little is extracted from a great deal of plant material. If there were chemical treatment residues on the plants, the risk is that these would also be concentrated during the concentration process. Starting with certified organic cultivation means starting with clean raw material, and for such a concentrated product, this is a very important detail.

How we work

We cultivate our aromatic plants using certified organic methods, at an altitude of 900 meters in the Modenese Apennines, in Roncoscaglia di Sestola. Distillation takes place using steam current at the Officine Aromatiche del Frignano, in compliance with the regulations. If you want to see concretely how we go from field to bottle, read how lavender is distilled, or find out who is behind the company on the about us page.
